The signs
HELP
- Handshape
- One fist sits on your other open hand.
- Place
- In front of your chest.
- Movement
- Lift both hands up together.
Remember it: Help lifts hands up.
STOP
- Handshape
- One hand flat under, one hand coming down.
- Place
- In front of you.
- Movement
- Chop your top hand down flat onto your bottom hand — and hold it there.
Remember it: Stop lands and stays.
WAIT
- Handshape
- Both hands open, palms up.
- Place
- In front of you.
- Movement
- Wiggle your fingers gently.
Remember it: Waiting fingers wiggle.
HURT
- Handshape
- Two pointer fingers pointing at each other.
- Place
- By the place that hurts.
- Movement
- Jab them toward each other twice.
Remember it: Hurt jabs — show where it hurts.
Try It — sign it yourself
- Sign HELP and STOP — these two keep people safe.
- Show where a HURT would be, on a teddy or a doll.
- Sign WAIT with wiggle fingers while someone counts to ten.
Hands learn by doing. Slow and clear beats fast and sloppy — every time.
