How braille works here — step by step
- Learn the cells. Below is the whole alphabet. Tap any cell: the school says the letter out loud, so ears and fingers learn together.
- Write in braille. Type words into the Braille Writer and see them appear in braille, letter by letter.
- Print the sheet. The alphabet sheet at the bottom of this page is made to print, so the cells can be learned on paper.
- Read the school. Every page in this school is real text. A refreshable braille display reads real text line by line — so every lesson here is already a braille lesson on your own display.

The Braille Writer
⠓⠑⠇⠇⠕
This writer shows uncontracted braille — letter by letter, the way braille begins. (Braille also has shorter forms, called contractions, that come later in learning.) A capital letter gets the ⠠ sign before it; a number gets the ⠼ sign, then the letters a–j stand for 1–0.
Works with your own aids: your refreshable braille display reads this page and every lesson directly, because the words are real text, never pictures of words. If your display shows a picture's place, the picture's words travel with it as a description.
